DVD Tutorial
REMIX
January 2006
By Jason Scott Alexander
DVD Producer Jonathan Kagi and Multi-Platinum, Latin Grammy-winning mixer and producer Charles Dye (Lauryn Hill, Ricky Martin) team up to deliver an exciting Digidesign Pro Tools mixing tutorial in this feature-packed new dual-layer DVD-ROM, Mix It Like A Record (MiLaR). Focusing on a pop-rock song called “She Loves Me” that Dye recently mixed for the independent band eL, the three-hour DVD guides you through the entire mix process using the hybrid facilities of newly opened Miami-based Supersonic Studios on it’s maxed-out Pro Tools|HD Accel system and Icon D-Control work surface.
Kicking things off are several introductory chapters that explain mixing basics, offer monitoring advice and provide background on analog and digital gear used in mixing throughout the years. Dye then gives a blow-by-blow account of how he mixed and automated the song, covering every instrument and vocal track with razor-sharp theory and practical tips on using popular TDM and RTAS plug-ins to get your mix sounding “like a record”.
The 1.7GB ROM layer of the DVD includes a ZIP file that unpacks to reveal 40 Pro Tools session files optimized for HD Accel, MIX, LE and M-Powered systems, as well as Sony and Waves centric sessions. Each session follows a related chapter on the DVD, and every plug-in (for example, Lead Voc DeEss), making it easy for you to experiment with parameters and get back to the original mix settings.
While virtually sitting by Dye’s side at the board, the vibe is casual, like being with an old friend. You not only get invaluable studio time with Dye, but also take trips across America with him as he discusses keeping mixes fresh, the importance of creating space, and more. Passionately delivered and inspirational, MiLaR is highly recommend.

Mix It Like A Record
EQ
January 2006
By Bart Thurber
With the onslaught of DAW-based recording studios, there's been a resulting explosion of instructional DVDs designed to help YOU. This new one from KAGI MEDIA offers up more than just the "here's the plug-ins I use" instructions (although there's a lot of that here) with Grammy-award winning mixer/producer Charles Dye being the focus of this comprehensive look into the art of mixing. Along with sharing many tricks of the trade, he examines the process of creating a musical mix that builds on emotional cues to really grab the listener's attention.
And there's a lot more here to explore, with the five main chapters broken down into sub chapters. Starting off with "The Basics" and ending with "Now That Sounds Like A Record" its like attending a Master Class in the art of mixing modern music. A nice bonus is the ability to open up and manipulate all the session files in LE and TDM formats. This is a great way to learn, experiment and explore every insane idea you can think of, without the band worrying about their budget! The only thing that mars this high quality DVD is the video production: a bit too much oh-so-hip video editing that borders on the distracting and occasionally deters from Charles' information. That said, you can learn a lot from this through look at modern production techniques.

Grammy-winning producer Charles Dye takes you through the concepts and mindsets needed to make your mixes sound more like his. Though the hyper-MTV production values occasionally threaten to get in the way of the excellent info presented, Dye's experience is well communicated here.
Sample Pro tools sessions (customized for HD and LE users) let you walk through the process with Dye. You do what he does onscreen and see how he gets specific results. Not for non-Pro Tools users (hey, its what Dye himself uses), but full of good ideas and guidance for anyone looking to become a better mixer.

Mix It Like a Record succeeds brilliantly because of Dye’s ability to articulate both the philosophies and techniques that he uses to turn raw tracks into a finished mix. more

Rocket Sounds

In 180 minutes of well-shot video, Charles Dye takes a step-by-step approach to mixing a single song (that becomes seriously addictive!) one instrument at a time. He prefaces the actual mixing techniques with discussions about his own philosophy and theory of mixing and about how the mixing process can drive the song far beyond what the original tracking offered.
