What an accomplishment! Charles Dye’s Mix It Like A Record is truly unique in its genre.
I was blown away by several things. First, the DVD is very easy on the eyes, the locations and edits are very eye catching. It could have been very sterile and technical with just studio shots, but the additional scenes and script make it much deeper than expected.
Technically speaking, it's "priceless", like the credit card commercials. The user gets to see and hear every step and decision Dye makes during a mix from beginning to end. You can actually hear what each of the processes is doing to the sound, plus Dye explains why he is doing each of them. And the sound quality of the DVD is phenomenal, I watched it with my studio headphones on and could hear every nuance of every plug-in.
It's amazing how much information Dye gets in there. It's taken me about 20 years, working with some of the best mixers in the business, to grasp most of the concepts he so effortlessly explained on this DVD, and still I learned a couple of new "tricks" from watching him in action. I will most definitely shift a track to use as a trigger so the gate opens just before the sound comes in; finally getting rid of the nasty clicking sound of the gate opening fast.
However, Mix It Like A Record’s most outstanding achievement goes beyond the technical aspects and into the "mojo" of mixing: the concepts, theory and "feel" of what to look for when mixing a song. I've always found those are the hardest things to put into words and yet Charles Dye found several ways of explaining the concepts in a very, dare I say, INSPIRING way.
Just like mixing is only 50% technical and 50% feel and interpretation, this DVD is also like that. Dye makes very clear to the aspiring mixing engineer that there's no "wrong" way to approach a mix, but he also points out how important it is to 1st "listen to the lyrics", 2nd "listen to the lyrics", and 3rd "listen to how the artist is singing the lyrics". The song and vocal performance is what has to inspire you to go a certain direction with a mix and it's easy to forget that when you're so consumed by learning all the new "tricks".
I would recommend this DVD to any sound engineer, musician, arranger, or producer from beginner to advanced. Just the concepts behind the techniques alone are worth it. Plus, the user gets to listen to an amazing amount of great sounding plug-ins and processes in a real-world scenario. Charles, you’ve made a great, useful product and should be very proud of this. I only wish there was something like Mix It Like A Record made 20 years ago.
